# Technical SEO for HVAC Websites: The Complete Checklist

Technical SEO issues silently destroy HVAC rankings. A site can have excellent content yet fail to reach page one because of fixable technical problems that go undetected for months — or years.

Most HVAC contractors look at their website, see that it "looks fine" on their office desktop with a 200 Mbps connection, and assume everything is working. But Google evaluates your site very differently than you do. Here's the complete [technical SEO](/services/technical-seo) checklist we use when auditing HVAC contractor websites.

## Core Web Vitals: The Performance Foundation

Google's Core Web Vitals are official ranking factors that measure real-world user experience. The thresholds you need to meet:

- **Largest Contentful Paint (LCP):** Under 2.5 seconds. This measures how quickly the main content loads. HVAC sites fail this most often due to uncompressed installation gallery photos — a single 4 MB image from a technician's iPhone can push LCP past 5 seconds on mobile.
- **Interaction to Next Paint (INP):** Under 200 milliseconds. This measures responsiveness — how quickly the page reacts when a user taps a button or link. Bloated JavaScript from unnecessary plugins or chat widgets is the most common cause of INP failures.
- **Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS):** Under 0.1. This measures visual stability — whether page elements jump around during loading. Missing image dimensions, late-loading ads, and dynamically injected content are common causes.

Performance data across HVAC contractor sites shows that roughly 60% fail at least one Core Web Vitals benchmark, usually LCP. The fix is almost always the same: compress images to WebP format, resize to a maximum 1,200px width, serve via a CDN, and implement lazy loading for below-the-fold images.

## Mobile-First Indexing

Google crawls and evaluates the mobile version of your site, not the desktop version. For HVAC contractors, this is particularly consequential because 70%+ of HVAC searches happen on smartphones. Critical mobile checks:

- Phone number is tappable and visible without scrolling
- All tap targets are minimum 48×48px with 8px spacing between them
- No horizontal scrolling required on any page
- Text is readable without pinching to zoom
- Forms are limited to 3–4 fields (name, phone, service needed, zip)
- No interstitial popups blocking content — Google penalizes these on mobile

A [well-designed HVAC website](/services/web-design-development) treats mobile as the primary experience, not an afterthought.

## Schema Markup Implementation

Structured data markup enables rich results in Google Search — star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, service lists, and business details that increase click-through rates. Four schema types warrant priority implementation for HVAC sites:

- **LocalBusiness schema** (with HVACBusiness subtype): Geo-coordinates, service radius, operating hours, certifications, payment methods
- **Service schema:** Individual service offerings with descriptions, area served, and price ranges where applicable
- **FAQPage schema:** Triggers rich FAQ dropdowns in search results, effectively doubling your listing's visual real estate on the SERP
- **AggregateRating schema:** Displays star ratings directly in search results, dramatically improving click-through rates

Always validate schema through Google's Rich Results Test before and after implementation. Invalid schema is worse than no schema because it can trigger rich result penalties.

## Site Architecture & Crawlability

Every important page should be reachable within three clicks from the homepage. Additional crawlability requirements:

- XML sitemap submitted through Google Search Console
- Clean robots.txt directives — no accidental blocking of important pages
- Proper use of noindex on utility pages (thank-you pages, internal search results)
- HTTPS across all pages with no mixed content warnings
- No broken redirect chains from past domain migrations or CMS changes
- Canonical tags on all pages to prevent duplicate content signals

## HVAC-Specific Technical Fixes

**Installation gallery image compression:** Before-and-after photos are critical trust signals but are typically uploaded at 3–5 MB per image. Batch-convert to WebP at 80% quality, resize to 1,200px max width, and serve with lazy loading. One contractor's gallery page went from a 7.2-second LCP to 1.4 seconds after this optimization, jumping from page 3 to page 1 within 6 weeks.

**Mobile click-to-call placement:** The phone number should be in a sticky header or footer bar with a tappable `<a href="tel:">` link, minimum 48px tap target height, high-contrast colors, and no competing elements within 8px. During emergency searches, the time between page load and phone tap should be under 2 seconds.

**Location page indexation:** Service area pages that are too thin (under 300 words of unique content) frequently show up as "Crawled — currently not indexed" in Search Console. Each location page needs unique, locally relevant content — not boilerplate with the city name swapped in.
